제1공학관 22동 홀은 5층과 6층이 연결된 공간으로, 두 개의 층을 오갈 수 있는 노란색의 계단이 홀을 향해 놓여있다.
홀에 놓인 계단은, 일반적인 계단과는 사뭇 다른 분위기를 연출한다. 마감 기간에는 각 분반들의 모든 설계 모형과 패널들이 홀 전체를 채우는 장관을 볼 수 있으며, 학기 초에는 거대한 크기의 1:1 스케일 도면이나 셸터, 혹은 파빌리온을 구경할 수 있다.
크리틱을 마치고 돌아오는 저녁시간 즈음에는, 해 질 녘의 붉은빛 노을을 머금은 도서관이 서측 입면의 루버 사이로 비치며 몽글몽글한 분위기를 자아내곤 한다.
이번 리모델링 프로젝트에서는 계단 사이의 ‘참’을 통해 홀과 연결된 계단의 매력을 극대화하고자 한다.
참이란 계단 도중에 설치하는 공간으로, 계단의 방향을 바꾼다거나 피난, 휴식 등의 목적으로 설계된다. 참의 설치 목적 중 휴식의 기능을 연장시켜, 계단참에서 이용자 간에 다양한 상호작용이 가능토록 하였다. 새로이 들어서는 계단은, 기둥 축을 중심으로 30도 틀어 기존 공학관과 자연스레 조화를 이룬다. 계단은 홀 내부뿐만 아니라, 테라스와도 이어지며 외부 녹지공간과 관계를 맺는다. 확장된 계단 참은 각기 다른 크기와 형태로, 사용자의 취향에 맞는 다양한 휴식이 가능하게 하였다.

The building of the Engineering Complex features a staircase in yellow, connecting the 5th and 6th floors, creating a passage between the two levels. This staircase, positioned within the hall, exudes a distinct ambiance compared to conventional staircases. During deadlines, the hall showcases an impressive display of all models and panels from various studio. At the beginning of the semester, visitors can see large-scale 1:1 drawings or shelters, pavilions, and other structures. As the evening approaches after critiques, reddish glow of the sunset emits a cozy atmosphere through the louvers on its west-facing facade.
In this remodeling project, the aim is to enhance the charm of the staircase connected to the hall through the concept of “landing.” A landing, situated mid-staircase, serves purposes like changing direction, refuge, or relaxation. By extending the function of rest within the landing, the project enables diverse interactions among users. The new staircase, pivoted around a central axis by 30 degrees, harmonizes naturally with the existing engineering building, extending its relationship not only internally but also to the terrace and external green spaces. The expanded staircase landing comes in various sizes and shapes, offering users a range of resting options tailored to their preferences.
